Pastor's Corner…..

O Canada !

CANADA DAY PRAYER
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.Lord, may I not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
Because it is in giving that we receive,
In pardoning that we are pardoned.
Amen.

ADULT ALTAR SERVERS FOR FUNERALS
We are thankful for the Altar Servers who take time out of school to serve at funerals a year ago, but are finding it difficult to arrange for their exemption from class and transportation to and from the church. As a result we have started a new ministry of Adult Altar Servers for funerals here at St. Mark Parish. This would be ideal for someone who is currently at home, or is semi-retired or fully retired. Co-ordinated through our parish office, this ministry would seek 3-4 servers for each funeral mass in the parish. This would be done on a rotating basis, depending on the schedule and availability of those who join this special ministry. Training would be provided.

THINKING OF GETTING MARRIED?

wedding bands

We are approaching the wedding season and I want to take the opportunity to review some basic information regarding marriage within the Catholic community.

It is important that we strive to inform ourselves and others about the requirements for marriage in the Catholic Church. One of the most fundamental requirements for marriage in the Catholic Church is that one of the parties to the marriage must be a baptized Catholic who is attempting to practice his or her faith.

Faith is the foundation of the marriage of believers, along with the love they are called to share in a Christian way. That is why we call marriage between two baptized Christians a sacrament. By its very nature, it is a tangible sign of the love that Christ has for the Church. Christian marriage should embody Christian love. In order to accomplish this, a relationship with Christ must be firmly established and nurtured throughout the years of courtship and marriage.

Please be aware that any person who is baptized Catholic is required by Church law to be married before a Catholic priest and two witnesses or be dispensed from this requirement before entering into a marriage.

This requirement is called the Canonical Form of Marriage. Because this is a serious requirement and a precept of the Church, Catholics who do not observe the required form for marriage are impeded from receiving holy communion until they observe the proper form for marriage or seek to have the invalid covenant recognized by the Church.

For a serious pastoral reason a Catholic who wishes to marry in another Christian Church, can be dispensed from the requirement of form as long as the marriage is to take place in a Church. All Catholics seeking to enter into marriage anywhere should always speak to their parish priest well in advance of a planned wedding to ensure that the decision does not compromise one’s full communion with the Church. For those who recognize that they have not observed the required form for marriage, this can be rectified through a simple process called a convalidation.

Marriages that took place civilly or in another Christian Church without a dispensation from the form can usually be validated if there were no previous marriages for either party and the current relationship is solid. This requires a meeting with the priest who will fill out some forms and ensure that there are no obstacles to a valid marriage. The marriage consent can then be witnessed by a priest or deacon and so be recognized as a valid covenant, restoring the Catholic party or parties to full communion with the Church.
